As one of the first four beneficiaries of the Magnolia Incentive Bursary it is a great pleasure to continue to support its work as I am indebted to the financial and pastoral support that I have received over the course of my academic adventure across Europe.

In 2004 it all began when I embarked upon a four-year degree at Sheffield University where I read French and Journalism at a time before tuition fees became exorbitant. My third-year was spent living in Bordeaux, southern France where I studied Journalism before returning to Sheffield the year after. Thanks in part to the financial support of the MI Bursary I was not forced to walk the path many undergraduates have to and take up part-time work to make ends meet. Instead, I was able to build up a stronger CV, being elected editor-in-chief of the University’s award-winning online newspaper and focusing my attention on achieving high grades on both subjects of my degree, then in its first year of teaching.

After graduating I enrolled onto a Masters course in European Politics read at both Kings College London and Sciences Po Paris, following which my adventure continued onto Brussels where as a stagiaire at the European Parliament I joined the press corps reporting on historic events that have profoundly changed how the EU works, such as the coming into force of the Lisbon Treaty.

I feel I owe a great deal to the Magnolia Incentive for their support during this time, and with tuition fees at such levels that deter many from heading to University and those who do leaving with a huge burden of debt, their work is welcome.

I'm currently out in Brussels still working at Oxfam International although I shall be leaving at the end of the month since I have accepted the position of personal parliamentary assistant to Sir Graham Watson, one of our South West MEPs, and one of the most respected long-serving members in the 'house'.

As a result, during August I shall be looking for future accommodation and I shall be back in Exmouth for a short while in September (should anything be going on) before heading back out at the end of the month to start work on the 1st October. Extremely looking forward to getting started!
